Shaw University is a college that's main focus is things involving the social sciences and liberal arts. One unique fact about Shaw University is that it is the oldest HBCU within the southern part of the United States. Along with being the oldest HBCU in the south it is also a part of the oldest African American Athletic conference known as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Shaw was founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Shaw was originally known as the Raleigh Institute. It was later named Shaw University after Elijah Shaw. Shaw is a very historical institution that has played a very influential part in the role of education in North Carolina. Many founding presidents of different HBCUs in North Carolina are Shaw alumni.
