Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is a land grant institution. When FAMU was originally started it was known as the State Normal College. Later in 1909 Normal College changed its name to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College. By this year the school had a student body of around 300 people. By the time the 1920’s came around FAMC offered many bachelors’ of science degrees. Around the 1950’s the total enrollment reached over 2,000 students. And by 1953 the name of the school was changed to what we formally know now as Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University With this change in name came a restructure in the University overall. Within the next few years many schools were added to the institution. Among the many added included Pharmacy Law and Nursing.
