Allen University is a historically Black private liberal arts college located in Columbia, South Carolina. Allen University has a total enrollment of over 700 students and serves a predominantly African-American demographic.
In 1870, Payne Institute was established in Cokesbury to educate formerly enslaved African-Аmericans. It was renamed Allen University in honor of Bishop Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, in 1880 after it was relocated to Columbia. The University maintains a relationship with the denomination, part of the Methodist family of churches. Allen has a significant presence in the African American community as one of the city's two historically black colleges. Allen University began as a school for ministers and teachers but has now expanded to produce graduates in various academic fields. The University is dedicated to providing its students with the best possible education.
