Located in New Orleans, Xavier University of Louisiana was established in 1925 by St. Katharine Drexel of Philadelphia and her Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a religious community dedicated to the education of African Americans and Native Americans. Today, Xavier retains its distinction as the only historically Black, Catholic University in the United States. Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy was established in 1927 for the purpose of educating blacks and other minority students to become highly trained professionals and leaders in the field of pharmacy. The College of Pharmacy offers the entry-level Pharm.D. degree as the only academic program and has over 600 students in the processional program. The College ranks among the nation’s Top 20 colleges of pharmacy when it comes to research funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to the 2009 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy report. Xavier has also been among the top three producers in the nation of African Americans with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
