Biography
Dr. Larry Lenard Lowe is Department Chair of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Health Science at Benedict College, Columbia, SC. He is a consummate science educator. He was honored as Benedict College's, Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year (1999-2000). He teaches introductory, intermediate, and upper-level courses in biology and chemistry. He has mentored scores of undergraduate research students and graduate students in his research laboratory on projects involving the effects of simulated microgravity on gene expression, the potential use of various isoenzymes as biomarkers to environmental pollutants, the effects of plant mutations on plant growth in outer space (space gardening) and more. And has served on the Ph.D. thesis committee of those graduate students who have worked on their thesis research in his lab at Benedict College.
His students have presented the results of their work at local, statewide, national scientific conferences and have place many times as first or second place overall in their presentation category. Dr. Lowe has been instrumental in major departmental curriculum revisions including the establishment of a model Pre-med concentration in biology at Benedict. He is an established grant writer and has published the results of his research finding in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Lowe serves on several STEM-related college and extremal committees. Dr. Lowe has received many prestigious honors and awards and serves on a variety of committees and Advisory Boards.
