The British Virgin Islands is a part of a volcanic archipelago in the Caribbean and is a British overseas territory. Comprising 4 main islands and many smaller ones, it's known for its reef-lined beaches and as a yachting destination. The British Virgin Islands have a subtropical climate that is pleasant and mild for most of the year, a factor in the islands’ important tourist industry.
Healthcare in the British Virgin Islands is predominantly provided by private healthcare providers with an overlay of public support. There is only one hospital in the BVI (Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital) and medical facilities are limited. Complex medical problems are frequently referred to hospitals in the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or mainland USA. In 2017, the estimated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection incidence rate (new diagnoses) was 8.6 per 100 000 population.
