Bermuda is a self-governing British overseas territory in the western North Atlantic Ocean. It is an archipelago of 7 main islands and about 170 additional (named) islets and rocks, situated about 650 miles (1,050 km) east of Cape Hatteras (North Carolina, U.S.). About three-fifths of the population is of full or mixed African ancestry, including immigrants from the West Indies or their descendants, Cape Verdeans, and descendants of slaves brought from other parts of the New World or Africa before Britain outlawed the slave trade in 1807.
Bermuda has good modern medical facilities with a fully equipped general hospital and numerous doctors and dentists. King Edward Memorial Hospital has a good accident and emergency department. In 2018, the estimated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection incidence rate (new diagnoses) was 7 per 100 000 population. The age-adjusted mortality rate for HIV was 3.1 per 100 000 population in 2018, with an overall HIV prevalence is 0.5 %. Bermuda was certified as having eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis in 2017 and recertified in 2019.
