The Howard University MSI HIV/HCV Prevention Program (MSI-H2P) is housed in the College of Medicine in the Howard University Telehealth Training Center (HU TTC) under the leadership of Dr. Goulda Downer, Associate Professor in the College of Medicine and Director for the project.

The MSI- H2P builds on the successful Gilead-funded HBCU H3P project that addressed HIV and HCV prevention on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). 

The project trains campus health service providers on effective HCV and HIV testing and counselling approaches including PrEP; as well as the medical management of HCV/HIV co-infections among young adults. The project will expand our social marketing campaign targeting students to raise their awareness of the HIV and HCV threat and how to reduce their personal risk of infection. Thus; the MSI HIV/HCV Prevention Program (MSI- H2P) is designed to strengthen the HIV/HCV clinical knowledge and skills of student health center clinicians on the campuses of MSIs and concomitantly educate students about how to safeguard their health. In so doing, the MSI-H2P contribute to better health outcomes relative to HIV and HCV for students who attend MSIs.

Partner: Morgan State University Health Services Center
Morgan State University is a public historically black (HBCU) research university in Baltimore, Maryland. It is the largest of Maryland's HBCUs. Founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the institution's original mission was to train young men in ministry. It subsequently broadened its mission to educate both men and women as teachers. The school was renamed Morgan College in 1890 in honor of the Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, the first chairman of its Board of Trustees, who donated land to the college.

Partner: Savannah State University Department of Student Development
Savannah State University (SSU) is the oldest public historically black college or university in the state of Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The school was established in 1890 as a result of the Second Morrill Land Grant Act, which mandated that southern and border states develop land-grant colleges for black citizens.

               Health Center
Texas Southern University is a public historically black university in Houston, Texas. The university is one of the largest and most comprehensive HBCUs in the nation with over 10,000 students enrolled and over 100 academic programs. The university’s enrollment has grown from 2,303 students to more than 9,200 undergraduate and graduate students from across the world. Although initially established to educate African Americans, Texas Southern University has become one of the most diverse institutions in Texas.

Partner: The University of the Virgin Islands School of Nursing
The University of the Virgin Islands is a public, historically black university located in the United States Virgin Islands. For the fiscal year of 2014, UVI had the highest alumni giving rate among HBCUs: 52.49%.  Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU (Historically Black College and University) in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). Approximately 2,500 students are enrolled on the two campuses: the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and the St. Thomas campus. The institution offers 47 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across its five colleges and schools.



Partner:  New Mexico State University, Aggie Health & Wellness Center
New Mexico State University is a NASA Space Grant College and is home to the very first Honors College in New Mexico. A Hispanic-serving institution, NMSU serves a multi-cultural population of students and community members across the state at five campuses, a satellite learning center in Albuquerque, cooperative extension offices located in each of New Mexico's 33 counties, and 12 agriculture research and science centers. Plus, distance education programs give students maximum flexibility.
