Statistical Data

• Texas State Health Profile-2016
  In 2015, an estimated 4,476 adults and adolescents were diagnosed with HIV in Texas. Texas ranked 3rd among the 50 states in the number of HIV diagnoses in 2015. Nationwide, reported cases of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection continued to increase in 2015, more than 2.9-fold from 2011– 2015. In Texas, between 2011 and 2015: Reported rates of acute hepatitis C increased by 100%.

  Prevalence. Number of people living with diagnosed HIV in 2014: 23,304. 75% of people living with diagnosed HIV in 2014 were men, and 25% were women.

  This report describes HIV infection and AIDS cases reported to the Texas Department of State Health Services Surveillance Program that were diagnosed through December 31, 2016 and reported to the system by June 30, 2017.

  HIV Infection in Houston: An Epidemiologic Profile 2010-2014. Houston, Texas; 2015. The Epidemiologic Profile presents a description of the geographic and socio-demographic characteristics of Houston and Harris County. It also provides information on epidemiological trends in HIV infection, including incidence, prevalence, and mortality; describes the geographic distribution of HIV in the area; provides information about the population with comorbid infections (HIV diagnosis with at least one additional diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection, hepatitis, or tuberculosis).

Community Resources

• AIDS Foundation Houston, Inc.  - AIDS Foundation Houston, Inc. (AFH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation founded in 1982 as Texas’ first organization dedicated to HIV prevention education and services.  AFH has steadily evolved from a grass-roots community agency to a professionally managed human services organization that provides many services including benefits and resources counseling, case management, housing, and food and nutrition assistance to low-income, HIV+ men, women, and children.
• Baylor College of Medicine Teen Health Clinic
  The Teen Health Clinic is a great resource for the youth of the city of Houston and its surrounding areas. Services include pregnancy testing, prenatal care, family planning, sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and HIV/AIDS education and screening, primary healthcare, and case management services to teens, their partners, and children in Harris County. The clinics provide services to teens in and out of school using outreach workers and community educators. All services are voluntary and confidential, with a teen focus.
• FLAS, Inc - FLAS provides health programs and social services to the Latino community. Including HIV counseling and testing and treatment referrals STD testing, hepatitis testing, risk reduction HIV prevention education, STD prevention education, hepatitis prevention education, peer education, street outreach, substance abuse intervention, financial assistance. Spanish speaking staff.
• Planned Parenthood-Gulf Coast - Individual prevention counseling, prevention interventions, HIV/STD/Hepatitis prevention education, anonymous HIV testing, confidential HIV testing, STD testing, Hepatitis C testing, STD clinical treatment, nurse on-site, family planning, dysplasia services, partner notification, volunteer services, service linkage to HIV care. Spanish speaking staff.
• Thomas Street Health Center, Harris Health System – Provide services to HIV-positive (or HIV-negative if participating in PrEP program);Individual prevention counseling, substance abuse intervention, confidential HIV testing, primary care, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), HIV/AIDS clinical treatment, Hepatitis clinical treatment, physician on-site, nurse on-site, gynecological care, medication assistance program, nutrition therapy, case management for HIV/AIDS, counseling/support groups, clothing assistance, transportation. Spanish speaking staff.
• The Montrose Center -The Montrose Center empowers the community, primarily lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families, to enjoy healthier and more fulfilling lives. Because LGBT persons face numerous health disparities compared to the general population, the Center has embraced an integrated care model with one-stop access to behavioral health and support services, adult primary care and psychiatry, and free wellness programs that empower individuals to proactively participate in their own care.

• Slow progress on HIV rates in Houston  - (2015). Houston Chronicle, Markian Hawryluk. Rates of new HIV infection have dropped faster in other parts of Texas than in Harris County, the county in which Houston is located. One out of every four new HIV infections in Texas occurs in Harris County
• 15 Cities with the Highest Rates of New HIV Diagnoses – (2015).  Plus Magazine online. David Artavia. The Top 15 US Cities with the Highest Rates of New HIV Diagnosis 2015. Nearly all the U.S. cities with the highest rates of new HIV diagnoses are in the South.
• Texas needs to work to end state's HIV problem. - (2017). Houston Chronicle, Anna Crockett.
  About 13,000 HIV-positive Texans do not know they have HIV. Texas is among the top 10 states with the most new diagnoses each year - 4,493 people in 2016. In total, there are more than 86,000 Texans living with HIV.
• Texas has a New Methamphetamine Problem – (2016).  UT News, the University of Texas at Austin. Jane Maxwell.  A new methamphetamine epidemic is quietly rising in the southern and western states, Specifically in Texas, this new methamphetamine epidemic appears intertwined with increases in yet another problem: sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV
• Houston leads state in number of people living with AIDS, HIV  - (2017).  Fox Television Stations, Fox 26. Isiah Carey. The Legacy Center puts the number at 2,200 people in Houston who are living with HIV and AIDS. Houston is ranked 12th in the nation for the number of new cases. See how serious this issue still remains? Don’t forget African Americans and Hispanics make up a large number of the cases.
